Side Effects of the Birth Control Pill
- murder of preborn child(ren) if conception has taken place
- irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting, painful or missed periods, breakthrough bleeding
- dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting
- decreased appetite, or weight gain and/or water retention
- tender breasts
- mood changes, depression
- spotty darkening of the skin, improvement or worsening of acne
- bloating
- increase in vaginal infections, vaginitis, yeast infections
- greater chance of blood clots (rare in nonsmoking women under 25, stroke and heart attack
- headaches, worsening of migraine headaches, gall bladder disease,
increase in blood pressure and an extremely rare benign liver tumor
- decreased libido
- abdominal pain, chest pain or shortness of breath
- eye problems like flashing lights or vision disturbances; contact lenses may not fit due to changes in the cornea
- risk of cervical cancer and possible risk of breast cancer
- gallbladder disease
- urinary tract infection
- aggravation of asthma
- severe leg pain, numbness, weakness on one side of the body, speech problems
- coughing up blood
- heart attack
- reduction in blood levels of folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin
b12 and vitamin C
- gallstones
- jaundice or yellowing of skin and eyes
- elevated glucose levels, changes in carbohydrate metabolism (diabetic condition),
especially if your parents or siblings have diabetes or if you
become diabetic during pregnancy
- inability to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted
diseases
- increased risk of osteoporosis when you take Depo-Provera
